Kirpal Kazak, a renowned and much awarded fiction writer of Punjabi, is a deft story teller. The tales he weaves are as extraordinary as the life he has led. Well versed with the socio-cultural fabric of rural Punjab, he delineates characters and situations from his close observation of social arrangements, inter personal relationships, the hierarchies of classes and castes and the struggle that disadvantaged groups undergo on a daily basis. Most of his characters are rustic, with an earthy sense of their environs that Kazak delineates so unerringly, yet he portrays some in urban settings as authentically as well.  The present collection of stories lays bare the battlefields within and without. Each character is either caught in a dilemma or a dichotomy inside the walls of his/her mind, or fighting a battle of assertion of identity against the world and people around him/her. The author has been able to transcend his male identity very successfully to highlight various issues pertaining to women, hitherto untouchedby other male writers. He stands up for them and voices their concerns in a large number of these stories. He has also articulated issues related to the labour class, which emerge from his deep insight and understanding of prevailing equations in society.   Besides fiction, Kirpal Kazak has also penned plays, television films and serials, documentaries and children’s literature. He has to his credit remarkable extensive research work on Punjabi culture, folklore and the tribes of Punjab and has published a vast deal of research on them. He has also prepared a number of encyclopedias related with Punjabi culture that include terms pertaining to occupations and an encyclopedia for children as well.   Some of his writings have been included in textbooks of various universities and boards. He lives in Patiala and continues to contribute meaningfully to Punjabi fiction and research. Hartej Kaur Bal, an avid translator, also lives in Patiala and is deeply embedded in Punjabi culture. She has translated for Sahitya Akademi and also for a Routledge publication.
